An important step to achieving your goals in life is to create an environment that’s conducive for your success.
You’ve probably seen the quote floating around Instagram, “When a flower doesn’t bloom you fix the environment in which it grows, not the flower.”
To me, it means: cut everything and everyone out of your life that will deter you from achieving your goals and add people/habits to your life that will help you achieve them.
You’ve also probably heard that “you’re the average of the five people you spend the most time with,” a quote most attributed to motivational speaker Jim Rohn. New research suggests that it goes even further than that. For example, if a friend of a friend is a happy person, you are more likely to be happy than the average person.
What does that mean for you and how do you change your environment?
The first thing you should do is to take an honest look at your life and who you spend it with. Analyze it carefully and make decisions based on your conclusions. An easy way to do this is to carry a journal with you everywhere you go. Write down how you feel after interactions with people in your life. Write down how you feel after you eat a shitty meal. Write down how you feel after a long night out at the bar. Do it for a month to get a decent sample size.
After the month, re-read everything. Identify who and what made you feel lousy after and what makes you feel good.
You will come to the realization that some of your friends, family, and co-workers are negative people and drain your body and mind of energy.
So what should we do with this information?
Start to distance yourself from toxic people in your life. Some characteristics to look for: people who try to control you, pay no attention to your boundaries, habitual liars, “victims,” and people who don’t take any responsibility for their actions.
This step is difficult but necessary. It will take time and could get ugly. You might find yourself “breaking up” with friends you’ve known for years. They probably won’t understand why you’re not mixing it up at the bar regularly anymore or won’t listen to another story about how the world is conspiring against them.
Next, do the same with your lifestyle and habits. Figure out how many hours of sleep you need to be productive. How are you eating habits? Are you working out enough to get your feel good chemicals generating in your brain? How much tv are you watching? How much time do you waste scrolling through social media?
Be honest with yourself and take the appropriate steps. Good luck in this necessary step to achieve your goals.
