Best Side Hustle Ideas for Millenials 2019
Most millennials want or need side hustle to pay off student loans quicker or to earn money on a flexible schedule. With unlimited possibilities of how to make extra money on the internet through the gig economy, I sifted through ones I personally like or do.
Here are my favorite ways to make extra money through a side hustle.
- Dog and Cat Sitting
Do you love dogs or cats? If you don’t have your own, why not make money playing with other people’s dogs? You get the benefit of enjoying the companionship while getting paid!
Anyone who owns a pet feels guilty leaving them home alone while they work. I know that I felt guilty every time I went out on the weekends and left my dog alone.
Sixty-eight percent of American households own a pet, according to the National Pet Owners Survey. That’s a lot of opportunities to help pet owners and get paid for it!
Rover is the nation’s biggest network of 5-star pet sitters and dog walkers. It’s the Uber of the dog walking industry.
The biggest question is how much can you make?
The earning potential is there, for people who are willing to work, a few weeks per month at a minimum. Sitters that treat Rover like a part-time job and take two or three dogs at a time, for two weeks out of the month, earn an average of $1,000 per month. Meanwhile, those that treat Rover like a full-time job, working 4 weeks out of the month and taking 2-3 dogs at a time, earn an average of $3,300/month.

2. Affiliate marketing
Affiliate marketing is one of the most popular ways people use to make extra money. You don’t need any money to start because you can promote affiliate products through social media.
What is affiliate marketing?
Affiliate Marketing is when companies pay commission, to their affiliates, when they generate sales.
You can find out who offer affiliate programs by googling them. The most authentic way to do affiliate marketing is by promoting products and services that you love. All you have to do is share your love for these companies and get paid for it.
Some companies offer affiliate programs independently, but most offer their affiliate links through affiliate networks like ShareASale, Commission Junction, and Amazon Associates.
ShareASale is one of the largest affiliate networks. The ShareASale platform has about 4,000 merchants listed like – MasterClass, Survey Junkie, CreativeLive, WP Engine; of which, over one thousand of them are exclusive to them. ShareASale publishes a large amount of data on each of the offers they are running, these include:
- Earnings per Click
- Reversal Rates
- Average Sale Amount
- Average Commission
While these figures aren’t guarantees of payouts you can expect, they’re certainly very helpful in assessing a campaign.
The advantages of ShareASale include:
- Large Partner Network. The 4,000+ merchants include more than 1,000 that are exclusive.
- Easy to Compare Offers. When trying to choose from the various offers available, ShareASale makes it very easy to evaluate the best ones based on the metrics.
- Quick Payment Cycle. ShareASale payout on the 20th of every month, assuming your account balance is more than $50.

3. Blogging – product reviews, travel site, advice
Millennials consume a lot of information through blogs. I know I do.
I must warn you that earning extra money through blogging is a long, slow crawl that takes a lot of work and time. You will need to: pick the right niche, provide valuable content, create an email list, draw traffic through various digital marketing channels, optimize your offers, and consistently high-quality writing.
A well established, popular niche will have major competition for traffic. Pick one too specific, you won’t have enough people interested in the topic to earn a sustainable income.
Here are some up-and-coming niches with low competition:
- How to Speak Chinese
- Weight Loss for Mothers
- Getting Pregnant
- Testosterone Boosters
- Vegan Lifestyle
- Alternative Home Energy Ideas and Solutions
You can monetize your blog:
- Promoting affiliate products and services related to your niche
- Getting paid to write Sponsored Posts
- Google AdSense
- Branching out into E-Learning courses
- Write E-Books
I’m not comfortable in front of a video camera and have not pursued YouTube yet. That being said; one of the biggest trends for 2019, in the digital marketing space, is the increasing importance of video marketing.
- 70% of consumers say that they have shared a brands video
- 72% of businesses say video has improved their conversion rate
- 52% of consumers say that watching product videos makes them more confident in their purchases
So what are the reasons for starting a YouTube channel as a way to make extra money?
YouTube is the second most used search engine behind Google. It’s free and simple to start. You can record high-quality videos with a smartphone.
Here are common ways to monetize YouTube:
- Adsense: YouTube will be putting ads on your videos, so you might as well capitalize on them by getting your AdSense set up (once you hit 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 watch hours within 12 months on your Channel).
- Build your email list: use your videos to provide valuable, helpful, and useful content to viewers. Guide viewers to your email opt-in and see your list grow. From what I read, it’s a more effective way to build your list than through traditional opt-in avenues.
- Affiliate marketing: review products on YouTube and provide affiliate links. Amazon associates is a great place to start because you can make a video on any one of their products. I’m sure you can find something you like on Amazon 😉
- Brands are looking for great YouTubers to share their products to targeted audiences. Start pitching to companies you love, with sponsorship opportunities, and see what ends up working. Remember to follow sponsorship guidelines. Work with brands you trust and products you believe in, that are relevant to your viewers.
Freelancing is one of my favorite ways of earning extra money as a side hustle. There are so many possibilities with this; you can earn money by freelancing or hiring freelancers.
The categories you will find on Freelance sites like Fiverr are:
- Graphics & Design
- Digital Marketing
- Writing & Translation
- Video & Animation
- Music & Audio
- Programming & Tech
- Fun & Lifestyle
Do you have skills you could offer in any of these areas? Keep in mind that people looking to hire freelancers on Fiverr either — don’t know how to do something or don’t have the time to learn or do it themselves.
They are looking for you to be their expert.
Freelancing on Fiverr will not lead to immediate cash because you need to get hired in order to make money. You will need to pick a good niche and stand out; through your job description, bio, and expertise offered.
It’s well worth pursuing because once you build up a reputation and have positive reviews, you will get repeat customers.
On the flip side, if you are looking to build a business; Fiverr is a great place to outsource tasks that you can’t handle yourself. I’ve hired freelancers to re-design my website, edit my posts, market research.
You can find people to design affiliate landing pages, promote your offering on social media, format an e-book for Amazon Kindle.

6. Career coaching
Are you an expert in your field? Have you thought about monetizing your expertise beyond making money from your job?
My advice is, share your expertise. If you’ve been working for a couple of years (or not), you’re an expert at something. I’m not talking Ph.D. level expert, but any skill or knowledge where you’re better than the average Joe.
You might be an accountant at a firm looking to make some extra cash on the weekends. Take on a couple of small business clients to do their books. You might be a plumber and take side jobs on the weekends for a little extra cash. You could be tech savvy and start a side hustle business to help seniors set up their wifi/tv/sound system.
Alternatively, you could look into consulting or career coaching.
Career coaching is something a lot of professionals use when they are stuck in a rut or want unbiased advice to advance their career. It’s always good to have an unbiased resource in your life to bounce ideas off of and get honest feedback.
Career coaching isn’t limited to ‘professional’ work either. If you are passionate about being a mom and have the experience to successfully guide other new moms to sanity; figure out how to become a “mommy” coach.
For fuck sake, I’ve even seen Video Game Coaches for hire. Who would ever think we’d get to this point? The point is, people will spend money to better themselves
So if you are an expert (I know you are), consider the benefits of career coaching
- Make money doing what you love
- Be your own boss
- Earn significant income helping others making career transitions
- Monetize your knowledge and experience
Additionally, no matter the state of the economy, or where you find yourself in the world, the demand for career coaches is always in excess of the supply. And, if career coaching is your love and passion, then why not learn as much as you can about how to be successful and proficient in this exciting and rewarding profession.

If you enjoy selling physical products, drop shipping is a nice way to make extra money. Drop shipping doesn’t take a lot of upfront capital (like Amazon FBA) because you don’t have to purchase inventory. You need money to pay for a Shopify Store, website design (if you’re outsourcing), and digital marketing.
- Pick a profitable niche
- Select products with positive reviews and existing demand (proof of orders)
- Market your store effectively
Promote through social media influencers. Send samples to influencers you hope are willing to promote your products.
Instagram and Facebook ads are also very effective if you target the right audience.
8. Domain ReSelling
Buying and flipping domains can make you some money as a side hustle. This is one I’m starting to learn about but it’s worthwhile researching as a viable side hustle.
GoDaddy is a great resource to see what’s available.
Use Google Keyword search to see what words are trending with low competition. Short, memorable names are the most valuable.
9. Take surveys
Sites like SurveyJunkie will pay you for your opinion. Get started by creating a profile, where they will ask you questions about yourself and your household. After you finish your profile, they will start emailing you surveys to take.
You will not get rich off of Survey Junkie or any survey site, but it is an easy way to make money in your spare time. You average making between $1-3 per survey, that only take a few minutes to complete.
My recommendation is to join multiple survey sites to maximize your earning potential because each survey site will only send a few surveys each week.
There are a lot of scams out there but thankfully, Survey Junkie is 100% legit and they do not send you spammy junk emails.
Their payouts are excellent, and they pay you in cash via PayPal.
Survey Junkie has an 8.9/10 rating on TrustPilot — the highest of any online survey company.
