Self Care: Sleep Edition

I’m a big believer in the importance of self care because it gets you to perform at a high level and have the capacity to take care of others. There’s a reason why airlines tell you to put the oxygen mask on yourself before helping anyone else (even your own kid), in case of emergency.

One of the biggest self care ‘things’ you can do for yourself is getting sleep. This topic is near and dear to my heart because my wife and I have two young children. We’re not getting much sleep these days. I’m also planning my dad’s funeral services, dealing with a rental tenant that is two months behind on rent, and working full time. So I’m a little stressed and haven’t been get good quality sleeping either.

And I’m not alone, the CDC estimates that there are 50-70 million people in the US that have chronic sleep and wakefulness disorders.

I’ve been researching different methods to help me sleep and came across a company called Gravity Blankets. They specialize in therapeutic weighted blankets.

Gravity Blankets claim that their products can help if you have trouble sleeping or problems with Stress and Anxiety. The concept of weighted blankets has been around for a while and been used in medical communities like – autism, mental health, dementia

“The Gravity Blanket uses the power of “deep touch pressure stimulation” to simulate the feeling of being held or hugged. This has been shown to increase serotonin and melatonin, the hormones responsible for calming relaxation, while decreasing cortisol, the hormone responsible for stress.”

Their products aren’t cheap, the 20 lbs blanket I was eyeing is $250. Unwilling to shell out that kind of cash to try something new, I looked up alternates and found this weighted blanket for $80 by Cute King on Amazon.

I decided to order the $80 Cute King Weighted Blanket and received it yesterday. I am happy to report that it works! My wife said I was as quiet as a church mouse last night, which was a huge win for her. I normally keep her awake with my teeth grinding and talking in my sleep. I woke up this morning in a much better mood than I’ve had the last couple weeks and noticed increased energy throughout the day.

The weighted blanket feels like a warm hug and has a very soothing effect. I was skeptical at first but am already looking forward to using it again tonight.

If you’re not getting great sleep, I highly recommend trying out the Gravity Blankets or the cheaper alternative from Cute King.

Don’t forget that you also need a great mattress. I’m loving Nectar Mattress, who offer a great mattress at a great price. Even better, they give you 365 days to try it out. Return it if you’re not happy.
